If you feel a slight chill, or the hair rising on the back of your neck as you pass the ladies room upstairs in The Pettibone Tavern, you are not alone. There are numerous theories about who haunts the Pettibone, but the tales of candles and fireplaces lighting themselves, wine bottles mysteriously falling out of their racks, and furniture being rearranged have persisted for years. The most popular legend says that Abigail Pettibone was caught in a tryst with one of the local men when her husband returned early from a whaling trip.
